If you purchased a home in 2009 that you are using as your primary residence you should file a homestead exemption in order to get a reduction in your property taxes. In Travis county, it reduces the amount taxed by reducing your appraised value by 20% on your homestead.
Fill out the form (link below) and mail it to the taxing authorities to ensure you obtain this exemption for the 2010 tax year. You need only do this one time, the first January after you purchase the home, and the exemption will remain with your home for the duration you live there.  The form is only one page and there is no cost to file.
